Quality Renovations
and Creative Interior Design
Before and After

This early 1900’s bathroom was built when sub-floors were formed by pouring concrete over wood slats installed in the floor. Not surprisingly, the eight foot floor was out of level by as much as an inch. Therefore, the renovation began with the removal of about 1½ tons of concrete.
The floor was then re-leveled with the installation of new 2 x 8’s and a ¾” tongue-and-groove sub-floor. We beefed up the floor further to accommodate the placement of a new cast iron tub by Kohler. Cement board installed with thinset, as well as epoxy coated screws, provided an excellent substrate for the wall tile.
The uneven ceiling was corrected by installing 2 x 6’s to bring the ceiling back to level. It was then painted with semigloss paint, which allows the light to reflect off the ceiling making the room brighter and creating the illusion that the room is larger.
Creative Interior Finishing
While the walls look like they were covered with decorative wallpaper, they were actually painted using a decorative technique called striped ragging. In a room with high moisture content, such as a bathroom, decorative painting is a good solution to the problem of peeling wallpaper. Decorative painting pre-dates wallpaper by thousands of years and can be easily customized to the owner’s taste. A quality glaze ensures that it will last much longer than conventional wallpaper.
