Custom Design
A design challenge: to create a new entertainment center, plus storage that doubles as seating.
- Blend in with the modern décor of the living room,
- House the components of their music system,
- Double as seating for guests when entertaining, and
- Accommodate the existing return duct for the central air conditioning unit, which was unfortunately located in the same area where the clients wanted their new cabinets.
I suggested that we build flat panel, full overlay doors with European-style (hidden) hinges that would blend in with the décor. Since the cabinets would double as seating, I recommended ¾” Baltic Birch plywood. Baltic plywood is a natural choice because it has eleven layers of orient stranded wood that makes it exceptionally strong and durable. I designed the cabinets to allow for proper ventilation for the stereo equipment and easy accessibility. To accommodate the return duct of the central air conditioning unit, I designed a dummy cabinet to conceal the unattractive ductwork.
