Basement Transformations

Photo of bamboo floor. The floor shown in this picture is a good example of what can be done to beautify your house as well as be part of the momentum to restore the vitality of nature and provide a healthy environment to live in.

This customer asked for her basement to be finished using as much green material as her budget would allow. After reviewing her budget, we decided that the best use of her money would be on the flooring since basements are typically carpeted and this adds allergens as well as mold problems duet to the moisture content.

I suggested bamboo flooring. Bamboo is a good choice because it is a renewable resource due to the fact that it falls under the grass family and is replenished more rapidly than wood. I installed the Bamboo as a floating floor in the event that her basement ever flooded. Should this ever happen, if the water is evacuated quickly enough, the bamboo can be removed, air-dried and re-installed with very little damage.

Custom Woodworking

Custom woodworking with solid oak plus slate. Custom woodworking with solid oak plus slate. This is an example of an all natural renovation. It features a custom built, solid oak landing, finished with a natural, oil-based finish made by Osmo. (See column at right.) The landing was tiled using slate which is a natural stone. Notice that there is a mosaic section of slate dividing the first stair of the platform. This combination of materials provides for a presentation that is subtle, natural and pleasing to the eye.

Recommendation

Picture of OSMO Hardwax Oil can.

OSMO Hardwax Oil is an engineered finish made with plant oils and waxes. Because it is microporous, Hardwax Oil works well in rooms with high humidity, such as kitchens. It meets German standards for resistance to stains from wine, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juice and, of course, beer. For more information see the Environmental Home Center website.
